What you need to Know - Aflac’s Hospital, Critical Illness, and Accident Plans
Aflac is not like health insurance, you don’t have copays or discounts, instead you have “payouts.” Payouts refer to the money Aflac sends you after you have a “qualifying experience.” Qualifying experiences vary based on the plan you choose, some examples are: staying overnight in the hospital, being diagnosed with cancer, or even just getting bloodwork done.
For example, say you have the accident plan and that you’re also an avid frisbee golf enthusiast. While playing frisbee golf at Balboa park you trip going down the hill at hole 4. You hit your head and dislocate your shoulder. Your frisbee golf friends call 911 and an ambulance shows up and takes you to Sharp Memorial Hospital. You’re checked over and you have a concussion on top of the dislocation. The doctor has you stay overnight so you can be monitored and signs you up for 10 sessions of physical therapy.
You go home and the next day get an email from your insurance with the bill for the ambulance, the time with the doctor, the hospital bed, the sling they give you, the tests you took, and well, the works. The bill comes out to an exorbitant fee, all for playing frisbee golf on a light incline!
But! Since you have the Aflac Accident plan, you’re able to submit a claim with the bill and an explanation of the accident to [email protected]. With the accident plan you’d receive a payout for: riding in the ambulance ($200), the diagnosis of a concussion ($250), the dislocation (up to $1,500), confinement in the hospital ($150), and ten sessions of PT ($250). Once that claim is filed and settled with Aflac, you’ll have $2,350 to put towards your medical fees or to whatever you want—it’s your money!
The numbers I used here were with the “low” version of the accident plan and I was also assuming the person who experienced this frisbee golf based tragedy only had the one plan, since they do stack!
Each plan covers their own unique set of qualifying events, and you can read more about them by checking out their individual brochures linked below.
