While most of our sponsored plans end open enrollment in May, many of our plans are still open! In fact, some are open year-round!
Open Enrollment
The following plans have an open enrollment period between April 15th, 2021 – June 30th, 2022, for all SDPEBA Active Employees. Retired SDPEBA members have access to all of the plans listed below except Aflac. Your effective plan start date will be August 1st.
Aflac
Between April and June, you’re able to enroll in any of our available Aflac plans. Meaning Active Employees can take this time to sign up for the Aflac Accident, Critical Illness, Hospital Indemnity, or our Life Insurance plan.
You can also make changes to any existing plan that you have, for example, if you’d like to change your Accident plan from high to low, you’re able to do that during this time.
If you’d like to enroll or if you have any questions, please call SDPEBA at 888-315-8027 or email us at [email protected].
Reminder: Retired SDPEBA members can keep their existing Aflac plans, but they cannot enroll once they are retired. If you're retiring soon, consider adding this plan!
MetLife Legal
Over 50% of adults need some form of legal representation every year. Common legal issues include: dealing with long-term personal or business problems; a sudden suit, like traffic tickets; or legal document writing (like will and trusts, power of attorney, or leases). These can be time-consuming, expensive, and just stressful to deal with.
Which is why SDPEBA partners with MetLife Legal. The annual cost of MetLife Legal is often far less than the cost of any single legal process or document creation. On top of that, you get access to a wide spread of legal services such as document preparation, free legal consultations, and family law assistance (for things like adoption and directives).
Active employees can enroll over the phone or ask any questions you can call us at 888-315-8027.
Plans with Year-Round Enrollment
The following plans have no sign-up period and can be accessed at any point during the year.
Aura Identity Guard
Due to a dramatic increase in digital content, it’s more important now more than ever to invest in cybersecurity.
Through SDPEBA, members can sign up for Aura’s Identity Guard, a program that is designed to protect you and your family’s digital information 24/7. Identity Guard uses machine learning to analyze and stop threats before they cause irreparable harm. This program protects you from fraud, identity theft, ransomware, malware, and phishing attempts. It can even help limit spam phone calls and emails.

Best Health Wellness
Best Health rewards you for living healthy and is free to all active and retired city employees who are SDPEBA members.
The main purpose of Best Health is to promote healthy lifestyle choices and health education. It does so by rewarding users with raffle tickets for every healthy lifestyle activity they participate in on Best Health’s app/website, these tickets then go to monthly raffles where you can win up to $200.
Through Best Health, members have access to one-on-one health coaching, articles on healthy living, and discounts on exercise classes.
Enrollment is simple, all you need to do is head to https://sdpeba.yourbesthealth.com and create your account. You can enroll at any point in the year, and it is completely free! If you’re having trouble or don’t know your employee ID, you can contact us at 888-315-8027 or email [email protected].
Nationwide Pet Insurance
Nationwide offers two forms of Pet Insurance for SDPEBA members, My Pet Protection and My Pet Protection with Wellness. Each of these plans covers a percentage of most veterinary bills, access to a 24/7 vet helpline, and discounts on pet activities/toys. These plans also offer additional coverage for emergency boarding and kennel fees, missing pet advertising/rewards, and theft/stray compensation. Whereas the My Pet Protection with Wellness plan also covers spay/neutering, flea/tick removal, vaccinations, dental cleanings, and more.
For cats and dogs, all you need to do to enroll is click this link and fill in your pet’s information. From there you’ll be able to read your explanation of benefits and get a quote for whichever plan you’re interested in.
For birds, reptiles, rabbits, or exotic pets, you just need to call Nationwide at 888-899-4874.

Purchasing Power
Purchasing Power is an online catalogue similar to Amazon that helps ease the financial burden of large purchases and gets the products in your hands sooner rather than later. Unlike other credit or law-away services, items bought through Purchasing Power do not accrue interest, there are no changes to your rates once you make the purchase, and you are shipped the item as soon as you start making payments.
Note that while Purchasing Power is a great way to budget appropriately when you’re short on cash, it is not a discount service. Items listed on Purchasing Power will end up costing more than if you buy them outright. That being said, Purchasing Power is a great tool to use in order to afford something you need, like a large appliance or a laptop, without having to worry about debt or dipping into your savings.
Enrollment is year-round and you can sign up on their site! Just head to http://www.sdpeba.purchasingpower.com and click the “sign up” button. Fill in your information (for Employer/Organization put in SDPEBA) and then start shopping, it's that easy!
Unum LTC
Long-term-care refers to services like nursing homes, hospice, or at-home care options that require over two months of regular care. Long-term-care insurance (often abbreviated to LTC Insurance or LTCI) is insurance that will help make that care more affordable should you come to need it.
If you have a chronic illness/injury or simply need help with routine activities due to old age, this insurance will help you afford it. If you’re interested, you can learn more at our site: https://www.sdpeba.org/benefits/active/unum/ltc
From here you can set up an appointment and read more about how LTCI can help you!
