WARNING–Holidays can be Dangerous [Filing an Injury Claim with Aflac’s Accident Plan is not]

While the holidays are truly a magical time of year, they’re also the most dangerous. For whatever reason, the number of visits to the ER increases dramatically between the months of November to January.

Trust me we get it. Things happen. One minute you’re showing off your new turkey carving chainsaw you saw on Shark Tank (yes, this is a real product), and the next you’re rushing off to the ER with 2nd degree burns from oil splatter and a missing pinky.

While we don’t want your holidays to be THAT eventful, we do want to make sure you’re covered just in case something goes bump in the night or while you’re at work.

Which is why we offer Aflac's accident plan to help cover you in case you’re injured.

How to file an Aflac's Accidental Injury Claim

First, seek help for your accident. Depending on the extent of the injury call 911, go to the doctor, do whatever you can to be safe. For information about what is covered under your plan, check the brochure here.

Once you’re safe, you can submit your accidental injury claim by sending our claims team an email ([email protected]). In your email you should include:

  1. The policy holder’s name and date of birth
  2. Date of the Injury and Date when care was received
  3. Diagnosis of the injury
  4. How the injury occurred e.g., did you slip on a banana peel? Did a small mouse hit you with a comically sized mallet? Did you try to deep fry a turkey (again) and end up splashing hot oil all over yourself?*
  5. Name of the hospital/doctor’s office (this can be generic, such as: Sharp Grossmont)
  6. Additionally, please note: was this injury work related? Did you get a prescription filled?

We need to specifically know how the injury occurred, what kind of care your received, and any other information you can provide.

Once we have your information, we will then be able to assist you, but we might request more documentation just to make sure you’re getting all of the benefits you should!

Worried about Holiday Safety?

Now, we’re not trying to be alarmists or anything, this article was not meant to put you off and have you worried about the holidays. But, if you are, there’s plenty of handy resources that’ll keep you from burning down the house as you light your menorah or wrap 15-year-old lights around your Christmas tree.

Here’s one by the Red Cross on Fire Safety. And here’s a neat infographic by ESFI

*Writer’s note: Please. Do. Not. Deep. Fry. A. Turkey. It is dangerous and a waste. If you’ve got to cook a bird, just bake it and baste it as it cooks. Or, hey, you can even smoke it if you have a grill/smoker. Just. Follow a guide. Please.
