There are a lot of different things to know about retiring, luckily SDPEBA is here to help!
Since retiring looks different if you work with the City or the County we can’t just put together a one stop article for both groups. That being said, there are already great retirement guides for you to familiarize yourself with the different steps you’ll need to take.
If you work for the City we wrote an article that goes step by step, check it out by clicking here.
If you work for the County SDCERA has a really great site that features a checklist and different steps, check it out by clicking here.
Benefit Options
One of the most obvious ways SDPEBA supports retirees is by providing benefits, you have all but one of SDPEBA’s plans after retiring. And you can actually sign up for that one plan you don’t have access to anymore (Aflac) before retiring and keep it while retired!
Important plans to highlight are: the Sharp Advantage Medicare plan, MetLife Legal, and VSP. These are all great plans that every retiree should consider as they either enhance Medicare or offer benefits that retirees tend to need.
MetLife Legal, for example, offers you coverage for legal services including drafting health directives, wills/trusts, and identity management services.
You can enroll in these plans when you retire, just be sure to contact SDPEBA 3 months prior to your retirement date so that way we can get everything squared away and let you know your next steps.
Continued Support
Retirees who need help with anything benefit related can know that SDPEBA’s team still has their back. We’ll keep you up to date with our monthly newsletter, news articles, blogs, and emails. If you have any questions, you can always call or email!

Events
SDPEBA puts on annual retiree events where you can come and meet with other retirees and ask questions directly to us or your benefit providers. We also attend many other events (and do our best to share information about them)!
Road to Retirement Articles
Still feeling daunted? One of the best things we do for retirees (in my opinion) is our Road to Retirement articles. You’re probably aware of them, since you’re reading one right now. But we have one article a month that comes out dedicated to either the process of planning for retirement or what you can do while retired.
For example, if you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed at all the choices you have to make while retiring, you can check out this article we released two years ago: https://www.sdpeba.org/news/city/road-to-retirement--so-youre-about-to-retire
It is a little old, but the information is still great!
