Don’t use your Medical Plan for Eye Exams if you have Vision Insurance

Do you have vision insurance and eye exam coverage through your health insurance? You might think this sounds like a weird question, but if you have VSP and Sharp’s classic plan, then... you do!

A lot of health insurance plans offer eye exam coverage, which is awesome, especially if you don’t have your own vision insurance. If you do have vision insurance and vision coverage through your health plan, make sure you’re using your vision insurance when you get an eye exam.

There are a few reasons for this, but the biggest is because most health plans only cover the basic eye exam, not additional eye tests that come with a comprehensive eye exam. Additionally, if you get glasses on the same day as your eye exam (which most people do) then you’ll want to keep it all on one bill so that there is no issues with payment later.

To make things simple. If you have VSP or some other eye insurance, be sure you’re giving that information to your optometrist. If you accidentally give your health plan, that’s OK, just make sure you use your vision insurance for everything after the exam (and try to use your vision insurance next time).
