San Diego Public Libraries – Books, Events, and More!

San Diego Public Libraries – Books, Events, and More!

There are 36 libraries that are part of the SD Public Library program. With a history stretching back to the city’s founding and with amazing resources, it’s no wonder our public library program is considered one of the best in the nation!

Resources and Cool Stuff

All SD Public Libraries offer free Wi-Fi, computers (and other cool technology), job resources, and, of course, books! Each library offers unique collections and resources (for a full list check out their site) that are open to the public/library cardholders. The Central Library features the most resources such as: the I Can Center, an amazing area that offers services/resources for individuals with disabilities to work in a safe and comfortable environment; an IDEA lab, which features computers outfitted with state-of-the-art software and hardware for creative work (like 3D modeling, video editing, photoshop, and more); and the 2nd largest baseball memorabilia collection in the world (isn’t that wild?). And that’s just the tip of the iceberg for the Central Library, there is so much more available, such as the Tie-brary where you can borrow a tie/handbag for a job interview,

Some other highlights are the IDEA Lab in La Jolla, which features a 3D Printer; the Teen IDEA Lab in Logan Heights, which features VR headsets, state-of-the-art recording booths, and a maker space; and the public art displays in the Mission Valley Library. It would be a lot to go over all of the individual amenities each library offers, instead, I suggest you check out the links below where you can get all of the important information on what each library has to offer!

There are also plenty of programs/services that the library network offers, such as test prep for the SAT/ACT, career programs, and art exhibits. For a full list of clubs and services, check here! Trust me, a lot of it will surprise you.

Programs and Events

San Diego’s public library hosts a wide array of online and in-person events that are definitely worth checking out! These events range from readings, book clubs, to dance parties for toddlers! For a list of upcoming events, check out this calendar: https://sandiego.librarymarket.com/. On their site, you can sort events from age group, location, start time, and more!

The Central Library often has an exhibition that goes over important cultural events or displays local art! For a schedule on what is being shown at the Central Library’s gallery head to this site here: https://www.sandiego.gov/public-library/visualarts#central

There are hundreds of other amazing recurring programs through the library for example there are general interest clubs, dozens of book clubsmovie nights, and much more!

Online Resources

The SD Public Library also features a wide array of online resources. Many of them require a library card (which is free for CA residents, click here for more info), but trust me when I say it's worth it!

One of the biggest draws is the fact that you get access to a number of books and audiobooks via the “CloudLibrary.” This site includes new books, recommendations, and the ability to sort by a wide array of genres. You also have access to digital magazines, literary databases, and online newspapers (the SD Union-Tribune and the LA Times). There are a LOT of other resources too, all hosted on this site. Simply scroll down to the section that says “Books & Literature” and marvel at the list of drop-down options… there are so many!

Another awesome feature is Gale Courses. We’ve gone over this in an older newsletter, but suffice it to say this might be the greatest hidden gem the library offers. This program offers free educational courses in some pretty amazing fields, e.g., accounting, business, design, literature, law, education, technology, writing, and more. All you need is a library card! We seriously recommend you check it out. The classes are really well done and are self-paced!

And hey, if none of that sounds up your alley, you can always check out the SD Public Library’s YouTube Channel where you can watch some pretty amazing content about books, poetry, or our city.
