There are over 5,100 farms in San Diego County! A massive amount of our county’s economy depends heavily on this expanding industry.
In an effort to support local businesses, the San Diego County department of Agriculture, Weights, and Measures (AWM) maintains a close relationship with the local farming community. In order to make sure farm fresh local produce is available to all of our County’s residents, the AWM labels true local certified farmer’s markets as CFMs.
The “CFM” label is necessary to make sure that local farmers aren’t forced out of markets by factory farmers or “fake farmers markets.” I know that might sound strange, but fake farmer’s markets are actually extremely common outside of California. Luckily, there are dozens of watchdog groups (like SD County’s AWM) and laws within our state that ensure fake farmer’s markets are kept out of our parking lots.
There’s actually this really interesting news investigation out of Canada about fake farmer’s markets if you’re interested in learning more. Check it out here.
Where are Our Farmer’s Markets?
We have dozens of farmer’s markets all throughout the county. They’re usually open on different days of the week. Check out the list below to find one near you!
